A recurring topic our support team deals with is how to set up Bulletin Mail to poll an external server. This page outlines how to do this. Please note, this does not replace the Bulletin Mail User Guide, just adds a bit.

These instructions assume that you have an existing subscription to Bulletin Mail and that you have an account with an external email server that supports POP3. You will need to know the host name, login name and login password for the external server.

Setting up the Server

Make sure you have an external POP3 server available before you setup Bulletin Mail to poll it. If Bulletin Mail polls the server and gets an error, the server will be placed into quarantine, causing polling delays.

Firstly, login to Bulletin Online Services and choose Bulletin Mail from your subscriptions.

Click on Configure your Services

Now click the Add Server button.

This will bring up the Add Server Wizard. Click the Advanced button.

This will bring up the User Server Details page. This is where all information required to poll the external server is entered.

• Title
  Specifies the "friendly" name for your external server account. In this example we have used phreaker.net.
• Active
  Turns the external checking on/off for this account. We want this turned on.
• Host
  This is the external server Bulletin Mail will poll for incoming messages. This information is supplied by whomever is providing the external server. In this example our host is pop.phreaker.net.
• Your Name
  This name appears in the From field of your outgoing messages.
• Email Address
  Specifies the e-mail address that people should use when sending mail to you at this account.
• Type
  Specifies the type of external server Bulletin Mail is polling. In this example we have selected POP3.
• Logon Name
  This is your account name on the external server. Again, this information is supplied by the provider of your external server.
• Logon Password
  This is the password used to access your account on the external server, and is supplied by the provider of the external server.

When all details have been entered, click the Update button. Congratulations, you now have an external POP server configured for polling.

Some mail servers require you to enable POP3 for your account. This is normally listed under settings - forwarding or something similar.
